The vast number of lesbian young adult novels are published and set in the USA, but there are a few from other countries. The books in this list include historical, contemporary, fantasy and science fiction - as long as they are set in a real place. We haven't been able to identify all of them, so if you know any, please tell us!

For people looking for Canadian lesbian book, I'm loving Casey the Canadian Lesbrarian's blog! http://caseythecanadianlesbrarian.wordpress.com
ReplyDeleteThank you! I keep forgetting about that site. I've added the link above.
DeleteJoanne Horniman also wrote A Charm of Powerful Trouble (lesbian protagonist) and My Candlelight Novel (bisexual protagonist).
ReplyDeleteThank you! We'll go look at those.
DeleteGreat list and thanks for the shout out! I've been working on compiling a Canadian queer women's YA list and this is really helpful. I'm interested that you've classified Zoe Whittall's Bottle Rocket Hearts as YA. It's a truly amazing books that became one of my all-time favourites after reading it, but I never thought of it as YA, although the character is eighteen when the novel opens. I didn't think that it had been/is marketed as YA (ie, you would find it in that section in a store/library). I wonder how you decided certain books were YA or how you found them? (this is maybe the cataloguing librarian in me coming out)

DeleteIf we've read it, then it's easy. Otherwise we rely on other people's lists and reviews - we've usually looked at a book about three times by the time it makes it on here (the first master list got updated a lot!), and had to go through the reviews with toothpicks looking for details (if we can't find one, it usually ends up on our to read list).
"Bottle Rocket Hearts" is one that keeps coming up as YA, so we went with that. Also, there is a place for older YA in these lists; books that are aimed at teens, whether first coming out, or starting to figure out adult hood. It looked like it fell there. We'll certainly take a harder look at it now! :D
Interesting! Bottle Rocket Hearts would certainly appeal to older teens as well as adults (it's funny that at some point teens magically become adults) but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to younger teens first coming out, because it deals with a hate crime. Thanks again!!
